Despite the unstable weather conditions, the 7th International Half Marathon „Dion“ was successfully held on Sunday, March 13th, with the participation of over 800 athletes in the main and parallel events of the tournament. The annual race, an institution organized by the Zeus Runners Club, was supported by the Pieria Regional Unit, the Dion – Olympus Municipality and was held under the auspices of the Metropolis of Kitros, Katerini and Platamon in favor of the Ecclesiastical Nursing Home in Katerini.
Crucial to this year’s particularly successful event, which started and finished at the Center of Mediterranean Mosaics of Dion, was the participation of Sports Clubs and Volunteer Organizations from the wider Pieria area, the presence of all local and regional media, as well as the support from many sponsors. Among them, DIOS Natural Mineral Water saw to the athletes’ proper hydration at both the water filling stations and the finish line.
Running in a picturesque route through five villages in Pieria and overlooking the mythical Mount Olympus, Georgios Sikalos and Vasiliki Karageorgaki were the winners of the general men’s and women’s Half Marathon categories , while a total of 200 people of all ages walked the 5km. “Sotirios Zgialtos” walking race alongside the Dion Archaeological Site, in memory of the late legendary Runners Club member. Despite the rain, a vast number of Elementary and High-School students also competed on the 1km. children’s race, reinforcing the event’s slogan “One race, one sports celebration for all!”
